Using endoscopes which are about 1cm in diameter a camera and instruments can be inserted into the disc and material of the disc which has slipped out into the spinal cord can be removed. This is done when the disc material is quite large and cannot be removed by scarless techniques, this is known as keyhole disc surgery or an endoscopic discectomy. This is quite an easy procedure for the patient and requires just 24hrs hospitalization.
